Personality: More than anything, Elphaba wants to be someone great. However, she is not ambitious solely to be ambitious; she loves learning new things and strives to be great so she can do good things. In her love of knowledge, however, she does not warm up quickly to things done purely for fun, and can be considered a bit of a wet blanket. Her father always disliked her, and so when her “quirk” (magic) was found to be a talent, Elphaba was determined to use it to her advantage. She has a wish, deep down, to be “degreenified” somehow, but she tries to pretend it doesn’t bother her and that she is comfortable in her own skin. As strong as Elphaba’s ambition, however, is her strong set of morals, and she sticks by them no matter what, even if it means being labeled as wicked by all Oz. Elphaba has sympathy toward Animals (intelligent, talking animals) and is talented at reading other languages, like the dead language in the ancient spellbook Grimmerie.

Brief History in Canon Elphaba, otherwise known as the Wicked Witch of the West, was “the wickedest witch there ever was” in the land of Oz. Before she was known as this, however, Elphaba grew up with a mother, father and sister, as many do. Unlike most, however, Elphaba, unbeknownst to her, was a child of two worlds: the magical land of Oz and the non-magical world that is our own. Due to her mother sleeping with another man and conceiving Elphaba the same night she drank a questionable Green Elixir, her daughter was born unnaturally green. Her parents both shunned her, and preferred to dote on her handicapped younger sister Nessarose, who Elphaba was expected to take care of. Upon entering Shiz University with her sister, Elphaba’s magical abilities were noticed, and she became a star pupil at school, though the rest of the student body shunned her for Elphaba’s disrespect toward her roommate, the bright, blond and popular Galinda. As Elphaba grew up, she became friends with Galinda (who changed her name to Glinda), and went to meet the Wizard of Oz. Upon learning the Wizard of Oz mistreated Animals and manipulated Oz’s people, however, Elphaba rebelled and began to denounce the Wizard. With this, unknowingly, she started the path to her becoming the terrible Wicked Witch of the West.

Background (AU!Canon; HP): Elphaba Thropp was raised in an all Muggle family, completely hidden from the world since she was born for a cabbage-like skin tone unable to be explained by doctors or Muggle science. Unknowns to Elphaba, her mother had had an affair with a man she did not know to be a wizard, who gave her a potion to supposedly relax the young Muggle woman during their “activities.” The potion, unfortunately, was not a skillfully brewed or safe potion, and thus when Elphaba was conceived, the Green Elixir had an unnecessary side effect to the innocent child. Being normal Londoners with simple Muggle understanding, Elphaba was treated as a freak and never let outside the house. She was home-schooled by her father and, upon the birth of her perfectly white, but handicapped younger sister Nessarose (which resulted in the death of her mother), was taught to be her caretaker at home and do everything for her. Elphaba grew up with the knowledge that she was different and second best to Nessarose, and although she hid it, she always dreamed of somehow being able to change her skin color and be like normal people. Then, on Elphaba’s eleventh birthday, Mr. Thropp was shocked to find a letter addressed to “Elphaba Thropp, The Attic, Munchkin Lane, London, England” in the mail one morning. After some discussion, Elphaba’s father decided that a school of wizards hidden away would be a very good place to keep his eldest daughter out of sight and out of mind. So the green girl, now known green witch, was sent to Platform Nine and Three Quarters with a floppy hat on her head, a scarf over her face and a pair of gloves on her hands, with a weak hope in her heart to become great and, maybe, normal.
